The impeller is the heart of an engine's cooling system. Visual inspecton is recommended every year. Replacement is recommended every three years. 

Caution: Running an engine without water can damage an impeller in as little as 15 seconds. Always start your engine with the water intake valve open, or in the case of an I/O or outboard, with the water intake in the water or with engine flushing mitts attached.
